WHAT IS VIDEONYSTAGMOGRAPHY?
A Videonystagmography, also known as a VNG, is a testing of central motor functions in a patient through usage of infrared cameras. The patient wears infrared goggles, which measures their eye movements and records the patient's ability to follow objects with their eyes. This process takes about 1.5 hours to complete and determines if vestibular (inner ear) disease is causing imbalance and dizziness to the affected.
Who Benefits from a VNG?
A VNG will be of benefit to you if you suffer from:
- Vertiginous syndromes and labyrinthine disorders
- Peripheral vertigo
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
- Dizziness and giddiness
- Autoimmune disease
- Meniere's disease
- Labyrinthitis
- Tinnitus
- Acoustic trauma (explosive) to ear
- Cholesteatoma of middle ear and mastoid
- Abnormality of gait
- Lack of coordination
Treatment and Rehabilitation Services
Together, the Balance Care Center team will develop a treatment plan designed to meet the specific needs of the patient, in order to achieve the best possible outcome. Treatment for balance disorders can include any combination of dietary changes, medications, surgery, or Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy.
Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy is a customized and individually tailored balance exercise program designed by a Balance Therapist, a physical therapist who has advanced training and demonstrated competency. Vestibular
Rehabilitation Therapy is appropriate to treat those symptoms which are brought on by movements, it has no effect on spontaneous attacks of vertigo (dizziness).
Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy exercises are designed to desensitize the balance system to movements which provoke symptoms, and to facilitate the natural process of compensation for vestibular injury. Exercises are
typically performed by the patient at home with regular follow-up by a therapist. A small number of patients will work directly with the therapist in order the reduce risk for falls. Therapy usually lasts 4 to 8 weeks, with 2 to 4 visits to the physical therapist during that time.
